On 5 July 2011, the world woke up to an unusual scandal: the Codex Calixtinus from the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela had disappeared. It was the Codex Calixtinus, a 12th century manuscript, considered the first guide for pilgrims, and a priceless jewel.
At that moment, a Berlanguian investigation began, marked by media interest, the hermeticism of the Church and all kinds of false accusations. Finally, the person who had been the church’s electrician for 25 years was named: Manuel Fernández Castiñeiras.
How and why would an electrician steal one of the greatest works of sacred art?
After months of bizarre interrogations, and just a year after the theft, on 4 July 2012, the Codex was found in a storage room belonging to Castiñeiras’s family.
